The staff of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are mourning the loss of Officer Marcus Monzon, who passed away on December 3, 2025. The announcement by CDCR came with messages of sorrow from his colleagues at the California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP‑SAC), where he served.
Monzon’s journey with CDCR began just over a year ago in April 2024 at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt. Upon graduation from the Basic Correctional Officer Academy, he was assigned to CSP‑SAC in July 2024. Despite the short span of his service, Monzon had already built connections with peers and contributed to the daily mission of maintaining a secure correctional environment.
In the official obituary, colleagues emphasized that he will be “missed by many who knew and worked with him throughout his career.” The outpouring of grief among prison staff highlights how even a brief tenure can leave a meaningful impact.
At present, CDCR has not disclosed any details about funeral or memorial services for Officer Monzon. As the community waits, the broader corrections family is reflecting on his dedication and service. In times like these, the memory of individuals like Monzon underscores both the risks and the human connections inherent in correctional work.
